In 1991, Zev Altshul (no relation to Cantor), is 15-year-old Hasidic boy living in Crown Heights. He’s a gifted handball player, which is why he risks everything to play in a tournament on the Sabbath! But just as he worries about getting caught, his parents get killed in a hit-and-run—and everything changes. Where will he live? At first, Zev is placed in the care of his observant family. When that becomes problematic, Zev heads to Illinois to live with his sister, who left the Jewish faith years ago. Going to her means Zev must turn his back on the only life he’s known. The culture shock is intense. Besides changes to his hair and clothing, there’s Star Wars, Twin Peaks, and pepperoni pizza. It’s a world of choices he’s never had to consider. Now he must decide what type of man he wants to be. Facilitated by Sharon Steinbach.
