Kindergarten (one day a week – Monday, 4:15-5:45pm)
The Kindergarten year is our entry program into our Religious School, planting the seeds for a lifelong relationship with Jewish tradition. Our curriculum includes Jewish music, craft projects, Torah stories, and holiday education. Students also look at Hebrew letters and participate in a weekly tefilah (prayer) service with their peers. Students form deep and meaningful connections with one another, with their teachers, and with the Temple Israel community.
1st & 2nd Grades (one day a week – Monday or Wednesday, 4:15-5:45pm)
Capitalizing on the increasing level of cognitive skills of our learners, the 1st and 2nd grade programs continues to develop the foundation for understanding thousands of years of Jewish wisdom. Our curriculum is anchored by Jewish values that allow students to see connections between Jewish tradition and their own lives. Through this frame, students explore Torah, holidays, the synagogue, sacred ritual objects, Israel, and Hebrew letters, music, Hebrew Through Movement, and more. Students continue to participate in a weekly tefilah (prayer) service with their peers.
3rd Grade (one day a week – Monday or Wednesday, 4:15-5:45pm)
In 3rd grade, students begin exploring the core “ShalomLearning” values-based Judaica curriculum. Using seven-core Jewish values as a curricular arc, students explore each one for 4-6 weeks. In doing so, they also touch upon Jewish music, history, holidays, Torah, Israel, lifecycle, ethics, and more. Students continue to participate in Hebrew Through Movement and a weekly tefilah (prayer) service with their peers.
Hebrew Through Movement
All 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade students participate in this experiential and participatory program designed to help students learn Hebrew by hearing and responding to commands shared by a trained facilitator. For example, upon hearing la-rutz el ha-delet, students would “run to the door.” By initiating this accessible form of language acquisition at an early age, students are more familiar with the letters, grammar, and structure of Hebrew by the time they begin to study prayers in 4th grade. 4th, 5th, & 6th Grades
Traditional Program (Monday & Wednesday, 4:15-5:45pm)
Our 4th, 5th, and 6th grade programs continue to work with the “ShalomLearning” Judaica curriculum. Each year the revisit the same seven framing values, but through different lens or perspective every year; just as we reread the same Torah portions every year and gain something new from it, our learners deepen their understanding of each value through nuance and maturity. The Hebrew program also takes on a formalized role, as students begin to “decode” Hebrew words and “blend” letters and vowels together to form words. Once they have mastered the “Alef-Bet,” students begin to work on learning and understanding the prayers which they will lead on the occasion of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Students continue to participate in a weekly tefilah (prayer) service with their peers. All 5th & 6th graders are also able to participate in the programs of our “56ers” youth group.
TiLearn Program (Sunday morning online learning, Wednesday afternoon in-person)
While the curriculum and content remain virtually identical to the Traditional program, 4th, 5th, and 6th graders may elect to participate in our TiLearn program, an innovative blended learning model. Students will participate in a web-based class on Sunday mornings and in-person class on Wednesday afternoon. The online class resembles an online conference, capitalizing on the use of technology to bring Religious School into a family’s living room. Students should have a computer with webcam, headphones, microphone, and reliable Internet connection to participate, but all training will be provided. This program is ideal for students who learn well independently and/or learners who love integrating technology.
